What We Do

Our staff has a long resume of successfully completed Cultural Resource projects that includes work in all CRM service areas.

Historic Properties

Whether your activity requires the need for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, or is simply driven by community interest, the first step in any cultural assessment is to determine if any historic properties are within the area of potential effects. Historic properties can include buildings and other types of standing structures, prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, and properties of traditional cultural significance that are eligible the National Register of Historic Places.

The A&B Cultural Consultants team has an extensive and diversified portfolio of work concerning identification, documentation, and evaluation of historic properties including field work documenting and evaulating over 1000 buildings along 150 miles of US Hwy 50 in Missouri.

When detailed mitigation treatment is required for structural properties, our team members are well versed in all levels of photographic documentation that may be required by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) or the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) standards, and have successfully documented hundreds of buildings, as well as overseeing submissions to the National Register of Historic Places.

Prehistoric Archaeology

Our founding principal, Dr. Bob Mutaw, first began working with prehistoric archaeological materials as an undergraduate at Southern Illinois University. Here he worked in a lab processing artifacts from a local excavation and learned the basics of lithic analysis. Next, he worked as an assistant lab supervisor and field crew member for the Dolores Archaeological Project in southwest Colorado, considered to be one of the largest archaeological projects in the world. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Dr. Mutaw worked for Powers Elevation where he oversaw the staff, administration, report writing, proposal preparation, lab analysis and collections management for projects involving the testing and datas recovery excavation of prehistoric archeological sites.

Bob is also a trained physical anthropologist and while serving as the project director for Native Cultural Services in Boulder, Colorado, he lead a project involving the excavation of analysis of a human burial. Interaction with Native American tribes and consortiums is a specialty at A&B Cultural Consultants, and the team is experienced in compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

In summary, Dr. Mutaw has overseen numerous projects involving prehistoric archaeology, including using ground-penetrating radar to analyze and stabilize a fossil mammoth site in Snowmass, Colorado. In addition he has overseen the removal and repatriation of Native American remains and artifacts, while coordinating and consulting with several interested tribes.

Historic Archaeology

Our team has an extensive resume of experience recording, evaluating, testing, and excavating historical archaeological sites. Both Anne and Bob worked together testing the historic settlement of Shibley Knoll in Marysville, Kansas for the Kansas Department of Transportation. Bob has supervised work using ground-penetrating radar to evaluate the historic 17-mile House southeast of Denver and the historic townsite of Brooklyn, Kansas, which was burned to the ground by Quantrill’s Raiders during the civil war, a fact that was confirmed by this investigation.

NEPA compliance, including EA and EIS

We have been involved in a number of National Environmental Policy Act projects, as consulting partners and principal investigators for cultural compliance, including projects in which Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) were required. We have consulted with some of the nation’s larger environmental firms and have completed projects for clients ranging from the Colorado Division of Transportation to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
